Catechetism – Foundations of the Orthodox Faith

Catechism is the process and period of preparation for reception into the Church. In the early Church, catechumens underwent a three-year preparation for Holy Baptism. Only during Great Lent of the third year would they learn the foundations of Christian doctrine. Prior to this, the focus was on participation in the worship of the Church, serving the Church community, and the poor, orphans, and widows of the community.

Today, catechism typically lasts for six to twelve months at the discretion of the priest. The Catechetical Program in our parish centers around integrating catechumens into the life of the worshipping community. Participation in the services and in fellowship, learning to pray both individually and as a community are central to this process.

All catechumens are enrolled in a 12-week course designed to introduce the essential teachings, worship, and history of the Orthodox Church.

The program consists of twelve core lessons, covering topics such as:

  • The Nicene Creed and the Foundational Doctrines of the Church
  • The Salvific Work of Christ
  • The Sacramental life and Liturgical Worship
  • Spiritual Life & Warfare
  • Church History and the Lives of the Saints

Courses are offered twice a year, and all instruction is conducted in English. The courses are not restricted to catechumens, and all wishing to enrich their knowledge of the Orthodox faith are welcome to join.

Lessons are given by our Parish Catechist, Benjamin Dixon, under the guidance and blessing of our Rector, Archpriest Alexander Logunov.
